Geek Shopping

One of my biggest complaints as a relatively geeky mom is how to dress my child.  There are no "geek" stores in my mall, there's no pre-teen geeky boy clothing stores, and where can I take him to shop that we would both enjoy?  The problem is that if your son is not into sports or preppy clothes there is nowhere to take them.  My dream store would be a place that had large screen t.v's where video games could be played, a science section where experiments were done on certain days, a place where I could shop for all the geek apparel while he had a place to hang out.  That would be a full store every single day.

Like most other moms I struggle with giving my son a sense of identity while attempting to make him look "cool" enough for middle school.  As you can tell from the picture, my son is a natural goof ball...the child doesn't only walk to his own drummer he has the whole drumline!  I love this about him and want to keep it that way.  I know he'll be a teenager and all the joys of raising a teenager will still happen, I'm not delusional!  However if I can just keep his ego where it is, his natural goofiness, and his pride in his geekiness that would make me one happy mom. That my child can hang onto who he is even when those around him try to change it!

So I started my hunt online.  A hunt for geek gear that is cool!  I started my search in all the usual places - Amazon, eBay, and Google.  I was very happy to find that there is an online store that appears to have been created just for my child!  ThinkGeek.com has become a favorite site of mine.  There I can find my son clothing and give him a cool looking shirt that clearly has a message that is completely him!  He loves Think Geek clothes and wears them often.

Last year I purchased this shirt from Think Geek for him.  He wears it at least once per week and now it's starting to get a little tight, I can see a new one being purchased soon.  This shirt is black, which is always cool for middle schoolers, but at the same time it is just geeky enough to be completely appropriate!

Think Geek is also a fantastic site for geek gear.  They have everything from furry hobbit shoes to light sabers.  I could spend all day searching that site and if I purchased everything that is "so perfect" I would be in debt very quickly.  The entire site is dedicated to the geek world!  Besides if you order their catalogue, the pictures of their workers are more than entertaining.  My son looks forward to getting that more than any of his other magazines!  It is definately a site worth checking out for all you relatively geeky moms.
