Laughter The Best Medicine
Laughing is a vital part of life in our home. It has always been that way, even when I was little. My parents are known to pick on their children, friends, and other family members. If we don't pick on you the truth is we probably don't like you! Why is this so important to me?
Laughter is sometimes the only thing that gets you through. My grandmother was a keen observer of this. She knew that laughing would get you through just about anything. She had her days, like everyone else, and she was no stranger to tough times but she laughed from deep within herself. It bubbled to the surface and then burst forward like a freight train. We'd get fits of giggles in church, we'd laugh at the ridiculousness of life, and we'd laugh when there was nothing better to do. Even in the worst of times there was always laughter. It's one of the memories I hold the dearest of my grandma. Her laughter is a sound that even though she's been gone for over two years now I can still hear it as if she was sitting next to me. It's the sound that sooths my brain, it eases my tension, and it feeds my bravery. It's her laughter that helps me through those pre-teen fits and mood swings.
There are plenty of times that I have looked towards heaven and said "it really is not that funny." I knew she was laughing and this is something I want my child to gain. I want him to know my laughter deep in his soul, I want him to hear it echoing in his ears, and I want him to go through life knowing that there's always room for laughter.
When my son was little I walked him to class every single morning and most of the time you could see us laughing. It didn't matter to me how hard the morning had been, how much of a fight he had given me, or what I had on my plate for the day. I wanted to drop him off laughing! There was once a teacher that commented on it, she said "You guys always look like you're having fun." It made a difference to me. I can choose to start his day out fighting and then he'll be upset all day or I can choose to start his day out laughing and he can breeze through his day.
This morning when I drove my son to school, he was practically dragging out the door. I thought to myself "he really needs to just laugh." And so I started going on about having a MARRRVELOUS Monday, having a magnificent Monday, having a monsturous Monday...and before I knew it we were cracking up trying to think of M words to put in front of Monday. My favorite was when he burst out "Have a murderous Monday!" We laughed so hard at the ridiculousness and by the time the car door opened and it was time to leave he was bounding into school smiling!
If nothing else today laugh with your child. It will lift them up and it will breath new life into your soul!

No doubt about it, laughter is the best medicine, and who better to "medicate" with it than our children!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely, I couldn't agree more!
